Where materials come from

A trip out to the woods of western New York has yielded some logs of White Oak to be milled for lumber.  I started with this fallen tree and should ultimately end up with the boards to be used in future boats.

White Oak is an ideal wood for boat building and grows commonly in western New York.  This tree was about 60' tall and 3' diameter at its base.  We counted the rings and found it to be about 110 years old.  Notice how all the limbs grew only on one side.  The next post should cover the milling of the logs into boards.
